Endometriosis is a painful chronic condition in which normal tissue of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows in an abnormal place, usually the female pelvis. In Australia, the delay to diagnosis averages around 6.4 years from first symptom onset to diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment for endometriosis can minimise its impact.

What Should I Expect From
My Endometriosis Ultrasound?
Approximate Appointment Length: 30 MinutesBecause endometriosis mainly occurs behind the uterus, an area that cannot be seen well on transabdominal ultrasound, a transvaginal ultrasound will allow much better views. This requires a long slender camera to be inserted into the vagina. You will be asked to empty your bladder before the scan for your comfort as well as to optimise our views. Whilst a transabdominal ultrasound can diagnose an endometrioma, it will not give the same amount of detail as the internal ultrasound.
The ultrasound begins with the transducer in the anterior vaginal fornix. It will look at the structure and position of the uterus and ovaries. Gentle pressure will be applied to the lower abdomen to assess mobility of the pelvic organs.
The bladder wall, distal ureters, and bladder mobility will be assessed for signs of endometriosis. The transvaginal probe will then be placed into the posterior vaginal fornix to assess for any bowel nodules, mobility of the rectum and any nodules of endometriosis in the posterior compartment, including on the vaginal wall and uterosacral ligaments. Any areas of tenderness to probe pressure will be documented.

How Should I Prepare for My Ultrasound?
No preparation is required. An endometriosis ultrasound can be performed at any time of the menstrual cycle.
